Why would God ask us to worship Him alone???

The first commandment is for us to have only one God and worship no other. Exodus 20:3, Deuteronomy 5:7.

God commanded the Israelites and every Christian today not to worship other gods for several key reasons, as seen in biblical teachings:

1. God’s Exclusive Sovereignty

In Deuteronomy 6:4-5, God declares, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength."

This shows that God is the only true God, and worshiping other gods would be a betrayal of His supremacy.

2. Covenant Relationship

The Israelites were in a special covenant with God (Exodus 19:5-6) and Christians today are a covenant people living under the redemption and promise of God by grace through faith.Worshiping other gods would be breaking their agreement with Him, just as unfaithfulness breaks a marriage, friendships and relationships.

3. Idolatry Leads to Corruption

Pagan worship often involved immorality, including child sacrifice (Leviticus 18:21), temple prostitution, and other sinful acts that would corrupt Israel. And even in today's world worship of money, partners, wealth, health, spiritual leaders and objects leads to compromise of ones true mandate and living a fulfilling life because all these are just passing winds necessary to improve your life, to serve you, but not to be your master or God.

4. God’s Holiness and Jealousy

Exodus 20:5 says, "I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God."

This does not mean petty jealousy but a righteous desire to protect His people from destructive paths. God in His all knowing power clearly understand that idolatry will lead to destruction and in His loving kindness chooses to warn His beloved not to take the path of destruction.

5. False Gods Are Powerless

Isaiah 44:9-20 mocks idol worship, saying idols are just wood and stone with no power to save. Worshiping them would be futile. Yahweh being the one true God knows that all that He made there's nothing that has the true power and fulfillment that a human needs and therefore calls you to Himself. 1 Corinthians 10:20 suggests that worshiping other gods was not just idolatry but also a connection to demonic forces. God forbade it to protect His people spiritually.

6. Worshiping Other Gods Led to Punishment

Whenever Israel worshiped other gods, they suffered (e.g., Judges 2:11-15, when they were oppressed by enemies due to idolatry). And for sure every action has an equal reaction as the scientists put it. So whichever path you choose you are bound to receive the bounties of it. Example could be, when a manufacturer warns against a particular use of machinery/equipment, you have the freewill to heed or not but whichever way you choose there's a consequence. Not to fail to mention that we are living under the new covenant that's salvation by faith through grace when you accept Christ and turn away from your ways. This declares that no matter which path you are on, you can still end well.

7. God’s Plan for the Nations

Israel was meant to be a light to other nations (Isaiah 42:6). Worshiping false gods would make them like the surrounding nations instead of setting them apart. God has set ahead alot of plans for all His people and the only thing that would hinder this idolatry and worship of other Gods.

Conclusion

God commanded the Israelites not to worship other gods to protect them, keep them holy, and preserve His plan for salvation. Worshiping false gods would have led them into sin, suffering, and separation from Him.
